Removing the Ear Muffs and Liner

My first step with this Oakley Mod1 MIPS helmet was removing the ear muffs. I find them cumbersome and obstructive to hearing. They also give the helmet a rather unusual look. I strongly recommend purchasing the helmet without them and adding them only if desired.

Taking out the liner was a bit more involved. It requires carefully unclipping it from the boa system, a process that felt potentially damaging to the helmet. There's also some Velcro attached with adhesive that needs to be peeled off, which is a little tedious but improves overall comfort.

Adjusting the Boa Fit System

Many reviews mentioned fit issues with the Oakley Mod1's boa system. My head is 57cm, within the medium size range (55-59cm), but adding a balaclava significantly impacted the fit. The helmet sat too high on my head initially, creating discomfort.

The solution was adjusting the boa system's position. It's hidden and not well documented in the manual. By adjusting the boa fit system, I was able to lower the helmet's position on my head, leading to a much improved fit, sitting closer to my neck and feeling more secure.

Wearing the Helmet with Goggles

The best way to wear the helmet with goggles underneath, which I prefer, is to loosen the boa system completely. Start by putting the back of the helmet on first, then adjust it to a comfortable fit. Tighten the boa gradually once everything is properly positioned.

With the adjustments made, the helmet feels secure and centered on my head. Even with movement, there is no slipping or shifting, thanks to the MIPS system. The light weight of this helmet is a huge plus, as it significantly reduces the chance of head fatigue.

Conclusion: Is the Oakley Mod1 MIPS Worth It?

The Oakley Mod1 MIPS is a lightweight helmet that excels in comfort once properly adjusted. The boa system, while initially tricky, provides a customizable and secure fit. Removing the liner and ear muffs enhances comfort and wearability with balaclavas or goggles.

While the helmet's top is susceptible to dings, its light weight and secure fit make it worthwhile, especially for those prioritizing comfort and minimizing fatigue during long days on the slopes. The lack of clear instructions for the boa system adjustment is a minor drawback, but easily overcome with a little experimentation.
